Phillip George Vassar Jr. was born on May 28, 1962, in Lynchburg, Virginia. He attended James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where he developed his piano skills and began performing in clubs. Vassar then moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue a career in music, initially securing a small publishing contract. In the late 1990s, Vassar established himself as a prominent songwriter, penning hits for several country music artists. His early songwriting success led to his recognition as the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) Country Songwriter of the Year in 1999.
In late 1999, Vassar signed his first recording contract with Arista Nashville as a recording artist. His debut album, “Phil Vassar,” was released in early 2000, featuring the single “Carlene,” which reached No. 5 on the Billboard country charts. The album also included his first No. 1 hit as a singer, “Just Another Day in Paradise,” and achieved gold certification. Vassar continued to release successful albums, including “American Child” (2002) and “Shaken Not Stirred” (2004), which produced his second No. 1 single, “In a Real Love.” His career progression included tours with Kenny Chesney and a charity single, “Words Are Your Wheels,” in 2002, released exclusively through Walmart.
After releasing “Greatest Hits, Vol. 1” in 2006, Vassar moved to Universal South Records (now Show Dog-Universal Music), releasing “Prayer of a Common Man” in 2008. This album featured the No. 2 hit “Love Is a Beautiful Thing.” Vassar has consistently charted singles on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs, including two number-one hits. In 2011, he signed with Rodeowave Entertainment. More recently, he released the album “Stripped Down” in 2020, which included songs written over two decades, and starred in the short film “I Only Miss You When I’m Breathing,” for which he won Best Actor at the 2020 Long Island International Film Expo.
