Jay Chou Chieh-lun was born on January 18, 1979, in Linkou, Taipei County, Taiwan. His mother, an art teacher, noted his musical inclination, leading him to piano lessons at age four. Growing up, he developed an interest in capturing sounds and songs and began cello lessons in third grade. His parents’ divorce when he was 14 contributed to him becoming reclusive, focusing on music composition. After high school, Chou was conscripted for military service but was exempted due to ankylosing spondylitis. Before finding success in music, he worked as a waiter.
Chou’s career began in 1998 when his musical talent was discovered by host Jacky Wu at a talent show. Wu hired him as a contract composer for Alfa Music, where Chou honed his skills in music production, sound mixing, and songwriting. In 2000, under Wu’s recommendation, Chou released his debut album, “Jay,” which combined R&B, hip-hop, and other styles. His subsequent album, “Fantasy” (2001), achieved significant commercial success, selling an estimated two million copies in Taiwan alone and earning multiple Golden Melody Awards. This release solidified his status as a prominent artist in the Mandopop scene.
Throughout his career, Chou has consistently released commercially successful albums, with “Common Jasmine Orange” (2004) selling over 2.6 million copies in China and “Greatest Works of Art” (2022) becoming the world’s best-selling physical album of 2022. Beyond music, Chou ventured into acting with films like “Initial D” (2005) and “The Green Hornet” (2011), and has also directed films such as “Secret” (2007). He has undertaken successful concert tours, including The Opus Jay World Tour (2013–2015) and The Invincible World Tour (2016–2019), which attracted millions of attendees and generated substantial revenue. His influence extends to philanthropy and business, including owning an esports team, J Team, and establishing his own label, JVR Music.
