About

John Charles Wiltshire-Butler, known professionally as John Butler, was born on April 1, 1975, in Torrance, California. He relocated to Western Australia in 1986 and began playing guitar at 16, using a 1930s Dobro passed down from his grandfather. Butler initially performed as a busker at Fremantle Markets. In 1996, he enrolled in an art teaching course at Curtin University but left to pursue music. His early musical experiences included a band called Vitamin in Encinitas, California, in the mid-1990s. In 1997, he had his first paid performance at the Seaview Hotel in Fremantle. In 1998, Mojo’s club owner Phil Stevens became his manager and business partner, leading to the formation of the John Butler Trio.

The John Butler Trio formed in Fremantle in 1998 with John Butler on vocals and guitar, Jason McGann on drums, and Gavin Shoesmith on bass. Their debut album, “John Butler,” was released independently in December 1998. The band’s second album, “Three,” released in April 2001, reached number 24 on the ARIA Charts and earned an ARIA ‘Best Independent Release’ award. Following extensive touring, the band’s lineup evolved, featuring Michael Barker and Shannon Birchall for their critically acclaimed album “Sunrise Over Sea,” released in March 2004. This album debuted at number one on the ARIA Albums Chart, marking the first time an independently released album achieved this, and earned Butler the ARIA ‘Best Male Artist’ award.

Subsequent albums, “Grand National” (2007) and “April Uprising” (2010), also debuted at number one on the Australian charts. “Grand National” received the Australian Independent Record (AIR) Award for ‘Best Performing Independent Album’ in 2007. In 2002, John Butler co-founded Jarrah Records with members of The Waifs, allowing him greater artistic control over his recordings. The trio continued to tour extensively and released “Flesh & Blood” in 2014, which won the ARIA Award for Best Blues and Roots Album. In 2019, following the “Home” tour, the John Butler Trio disbanded, with Butler continuing his solo career.
