About

Richard Christopher Wakeman was born on May 18, 1949, in Perivale, Middlesex, England. He began his musical journey learning piano at age five and later the church organ at twelve. Despite being classically trained at the Royal College of Music, he left in 1969 to pursue a career as a session musician. In this role, he contributed to an estimated 2,000 sessions, including notable work on David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” and “Life on Mars,” and Cat Stevens’ “Morning Has Broken.” His efficiency earned him the nickname “One Take Wakeman.” He also played with The Strawbs before joining Yes in 1971, where his innovative use of keyboards, including the Hammond organ, Moog synthesizer, and Mellotron, alongside his distinctive stage presence featuring capes, made him a prominent figure in progressive rock.

Wakeman’s solo career took off with three highly successful concept albums: “The Six Wives of Henry VIII” (1973), “Journey to the Centre of the Earth” (1974), and “The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table” (1975). “Journey to the Centre of the Earth” notably topped the UK charts. He endured financial challenges, including debt and a period of homelessness, which led him to explore more commercially viable music, such as New Age and Christian compositions. His album “Country Airs” (1986) became a commercial success in the New Age genre. He rejoined Yes multiple times throughout his career, contributing to albums like “Fragile” (1971) and “Close to the Edge” (1972).

Beyond his music, Wakeman became a public figure through television and radio broadcasting, appearing on shows such as “Grumpy Old Men.” He has authored three books and hosted radio programs. In 2017, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Yes. His 2017 solo piano album, “Piano Portraits,” marked his highest chart position in 42 years, reaching number 6 in the UK. In 2021, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to music and broadcasting, recognizing his significant contributions over six decades.
