About

John Ford Coley, born John Edward Colley on October 13, 1948, in Dallas, Texas, developed an early interest in music. His background included listening to the Grand Ole Opry, early rock and roll, and church hymns, alongside receiving training as a classical pianist. While attending W. W. Samuell High School in Dallas, Coley joined the group Theze Few with classmate Dan Seals. This group evolved into Southwest F.O.B., which toured the Texas music scene and achieved a charting song, “The Smell of Incense,” reaching number 56 on the pop chart in 1968. During this period, Southwest F.O.B. performed alongside notable acts such as Led Zeppelin.

While still part of Southwest F.O.B., Seals and Coley initiated an acoustic act, initially named Coley and Wayland. This duo was later renamed England Dan & John Ford Coley. They secured a contract with A&M Records in 1970 and subsequently relocated to Los Angeles in 1971, where they performed as an opening act for various bands. Their initial significant breakthrough occurred in 1972 with the song “Simone,” which became a number one hit in Japan and gained popularity in France. Despite this international success, the song did not achieve similar traction in the United States, leading to their departure from A&M after three albums.

After leaving A&M, the duo obtained another recording contract with Big Tree Records, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records. This partnership led to widespread success, beginning with their 1976 single “I’d Really Love to See You Tonight,” which peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold two million copies. This period saw them achieve four top-ten hits and two top-twenty hits, earning Grammy Award nominations, as well as triple-platinum and gold records across eight albums. The duo disbanded in 1980, after which Coley continued his career through acting in teen films in the 1980s, working as a co-producer for other artists, and returning to touring in 1996 to perform internationally.
