Anaïs Oluwatoyin Estelle Marinho, known professionally as Arlo Parks, was born on August 9, 2000, in London, England. She was raised in Hammersmith, West London, and is of Nigerian, Chadian, and French descent. Parks attended Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith and completed her A Levels at Ashbourne College in early 2019. Her early life experiences and observations laid the groundwork for her introspective songwriting style.
Parks began her music career in 2018 by uploading demos to BBC Music Introducing, which led to her being managed by Ali Raymond of Beatnik Creative. Her debut solo single, “Cola,” released in November 2018 through Beatnik Records, quickly garnered over three million streams on Spotify by November 2019. Following this success, she signed with Transgressive Records and released her debut EP, “Super Sad Generation,” in April 2019, recorded in her home and an Airbnb in London. This period saw her perform at significant events like The Great Escape and Glastonbury Festival in 2019, and she also embarked on her first tour supporting Jordan Rakei.
Her career continued to progress with the release of a second EP, “Sophie,” in late 2019, exploring themes of heartbreak and mortality. In 2020, Parks released notable singles “Eugene” and “Black Dog,” the latter becoming BBC Radio 1’s Tune of the Week. Her debut studio album, “Collapsed in Sunbeams,” released in January 2021, received widespread critical acclaim, peaking at number three on the UK Albums Chart. The album earned her nominations for Album of the Year, Best New Artist, and Best British Female Solo Artist at the 2021 Brit Awards, and she won the Mercury Prize for Best Album in 2021. Parks has since toured extensively and released her second album, “My Soft Machine,” in May 2023, and her debut poetry book, “The Magic Border,” in September 2023.
