Kelsey Waldon was born in Ballard County, Kentucky, and grew up in Monkey’s Eyebrow, Kentucky. Her family history in the Bluegrass State extends back over ten generations, with previous generations working as tobacco farmers and cattle raisers. Waldon’s early work experiences included farming and planting tobacco. She began playing guitar at age 13, using music to navigate her parents’ divorce and as an outlet throughout her teenage years. After high school, she moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue a career in music. Initially taking on small gigs, she later enrolled in Belmont University to major in songwriting and music business, aiming to deepen her understanding of the music industry.
Waldon independently released four EPs before her debut LP. Her early EPs included “Dirty Feet, Dirty Hands” (2007), “Anchor In The Valley” (2010), “Anybody’s Darlin” (2011), and “Fixin’ It Up” (2012). Her recognition grew significantly with the release of “The Goldmine” in 2014, produced by Michael Rinne, which was described by The Fader as “the brightest country debut of 2014.” Rolling Stone also recognized her in their “10 New Artists You Need To Know: Summer 2014” list. In 2016, she released “I’ve Got A Way,” her sophomore album, which was featured on two of NPR’s most acclaimed lists of the year, including Ken Tucker’s “Top 10 Favorite Albums of 2016” alongside artists like Beyoncé and Miranda Lambert.
A significant career milestone occurred in May 2019 when it was announced at the Grand Ole Opry that Waldon had signed with John Prine’s Oh Boy Records. She was the first artist to be signed to Prine’s label in fifteen years. Her first release with Oh Boy Records was “White Noise/White Lines” on October 4, 2019, an album produced by Waldon and Dan Knobler. The lead single from this album was “Anyhow.” Her album “Every Ghost” was released on June 20, 2025. Waldon has performed with prominent artists including John Prine, Willie Nelson, Tanya Tucker, and Jamey Johnson, and has made multiple appearances at the Grand Ole Opry and other historic venues.
