About

Willie Hugh Nelson was born on April 29, 1933, in Abbott, Texas. Raised by his grandparents who introduced him to music, Nelson began writing songs at age seven and joined his first band at ten. After graduating from high school in 1950, he served in the U.S. Air Force before being medically discharged. He briefly attended Baylor University before dedicating himself to music.

Nelson spent the late 1950s working as a disc jockey and performing as a singer and songwriter. During this period, he composed songs that would later become country classics, such as “Funny How Time Slips Away,” “Hello Walls,” “Pretty Paper,” and “Crazy.” In 1960, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and secured a publishing contract, ultimately leading to his first album, “…And Then I Wrote” (1962). He joined RCA Victor in 1964 and the Grand Ole Opry in 1965. By the early 1970s, disenchanted with the Nashville scene, Nelson relocated to Austin, Texas, and shifted his musical direction towards “outlaw country.”

His career saw significant success with albums like “Shotgun Willie” (1973), “Red Headed Stranger” (1975), and “Stardust” (1978), establishing him as a prominent figure in country music. Throughout the 1980s, Nelson continued to achieve hits and formed the supergroup The Highwaymen with Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson. He also became actively involved in activism, co-founding Farm Aid in 1985 and advocating for environmental causes and marijuana legalization. Despite facing financial challenges in the early 1990s due to IRS issues, Nelson maintained a prolific touring and recording schedule, exploring diverse genres and collaborating with many artists, solidifying his status as a cultural icon.
