About

John Kay was born Joachim Fritz Krauledat on April 12, 1944, in Tilsit, East Prussia, Germany. His early life was marked by displacement, as his mother fled with him from advancing Soviet troops in 1945. They resettled in Hanover, West Germany, and later immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1958, where he was known as John K. In 1963, his family moved to Buffalo, New York, and became American citizens. Kay’s musical journey began in California after hitchhiking to Canada in 1965, where he joined the blues-rock band The Sparrows. The band experienced moderate success in Canada before relocating to California, expanding its lineup, and rebranding as Steppenwolf in 1967.

Steppenwolf quickly rose to international fame with their pioneer hard rock sound. Their notable hits include “Born to Be Wild” (peaked at #2 in 1968), “Magic Carpet Ride” (peaked at #3 in 1968), and “Rock Me.” The track “Born to Be Wild” famously introduced the term “heavy metal” into rock lyrics and was prominently featured, along with “The Pusher,” in the 1969 film ‘Easy Rider,’ cementing the band’s association with motorcycle culture. Steppenwolf released seven gold albums and one platinum album, accumulating 13 Billboard Hot 100 singles, with seven reaching the Top 40.

After initially disbanding in 1972, Kay embarked on a brief solo career before reforming Steppenwolf in 1974. The band continued to tour and release music, with Kay remaining the only original member from 1980 onward, performing under the name John Kay & Steppenwolf. In 2018, Kay concluded Steppenwolf’s 50-year touring career with a final performance. His contributions to music were recognized with an induction into Canada’s Walk of Fame. Alongside his musical achievements, Kay, with his wife Jutta Maue, co-founded the Maue-Kay Foundation, dedicating their efforts to human rights, wildlife protection, and environmental conservation.
