George Kusunoki Miller, known professionally as Joji, was born in Osaka, Japan, to an Australian father and a Japanese mother. He attended Canadian Academy, an international school in Kobe, Japan, graduating in 2012. At the age of 18, Miller relocated to the United States, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the New York Institute of Technology in 2016. Early in his career, before his musical endeavors as Joji, Miller gained recognition for his YouTube channels, “TVFilthyFrank,” “TooDamnFilthy,” and “DizastaMusic,” which he used to produce comedy content, often featuring eccentric characters like Filthy Frank and Pink Guy. These channels, active from 2011 to 2017, were noted for their shock humor, viral content, and comedic music releases, including two studio albums as Pink Guy. Most notably, Miller popularized the “Harlem Shake” internet meme in 2013, which contributed to the commercial success of Baauer’s song of the same name.
In late 2017, Miller transitioned from his YouTube comedy career due to health conditions and a desire to pursue music more seriously, adopting the moniker Joji. He signed with 88Rising and 12Tone Music Group. His debut EP as Joji, “In Tongues,” was released on November 3, 2017, followed by a deluxe version in February 2018. His first two studio albums, “Ballads 1” (2018) and “Nectar” (2020), both achieved commercial success, peaking at number three on the Billboard 200 chart. These albums featured singles such as “Slow Dancing in the Dark” and “Sanctuary,” which reached the Billboard Hot 100. In 2022, his single “Glimpse of Us” peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the ARIA Charts, becoming his highest-charting song. This preceded his third album, “Smithereens,” released in 2022. Miller has toured internationally, including the “Ballads 1 Tour” (2018–2019), “Nectar: The Finale” (2021–2022), and the “Smithereens Tour” (2022–2023). On October 14, 2025, after a three-year hiatus, Joji released the single “Pixelated Kisses,” marking his first release through Virgin Music. His music style is often described as trip hop and lo-fi, incorporating elements of R&B, folk, electronic, and trap, characterized by melancholic themes and soulful vocals.
