Juan Luis Guerra is a Dominican musician, singer, composer, and record producer recognized for his global success and artistic contributions to Latin music. After the international breakthrough of his album ‘Ojalá Que Llueva Café’ in 1988, Juan Luis Guerra established himself as a dominant force in Latin music. A graduate of Berklee College of Music in 1982 with a diploma in jazz composition, Guerra formed the band Juan Luis Guerra y 440, releasing their debut album, ‘Soplando’, in 1984. Following a signing with Karen Records in 1983, his career pivoted towards merengue, resulting in albums such as ‘Mudanza y Acarreo’ (1985) and ‘Mientras Más Lo Pienso…Tú’ (1987).
The same year, Guerra surpassed Celia Cruz’s record for largest concert attendance at the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. He continued this prolific period with the release of ‘Privé’ in 2020. Most recently, Guerra released the EP ‘Radio Güira’ in 2023 with his band 4.40. In 2024, he achieved further critical acclaim at the Latin GRAMMYs, where ‘Radio Güira’ won Album of the Year, and the track ‘MAMBO 23’ from the album was awarded Record Of The Year.
The year 2024 also saw the release of his animated film ‘Captain Avispa’, which is based on his song ‘Las Avispas’.
