Judith Kay Newton, known professionally as Juice Newton, was born on February 18, 1952, in Lakehurst, New Jersey. Her musical journey began in her early teenage years when she received a guitar for her 13th birthday, sparking an interest in folk music. After graduating from First Colonial High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia, she attended Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, California, where she performed in local coffeehouses. This period marked the formation of a folk-rock band, initially named Dixie Peach, with guitarist and songwriter Otha Young. This partnership would become a significant and enduring aspect of her career.
In the early 1970s, Newton, Otha Young, and Tom Kealey formed Juice Newton & Silver Spur, eventually securing a record deal with RCA Records in 1975. The band released two albums before moving to Capitol Records in 1977. Shortly after their Capitol debut, the band disbanded, and Newton embarked on a solo career, with Silver Spur continuing as her backing band until 1982. Her solo efforts gained momentum with “It’s a Heartache” in 1977, which became a significant hit in Mexico and her first of eleven singles to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1978, she legally adopted “Juice Newton” as her professional name, coinciding with the Carpenters’ Top 10 country and adult contemporary success of her co-penned song “Sweet, Sweet Smile.”
Newton’s career surged in the early 1980s with her third solo album, “Juice” (1981), achieving three consecutive Top-10 pop hits: “Angel of the Morning,” “Queen of Hearts,” and “The Sweetest Thing (I’ve Ever Known),” the latter becoming a number-one country hit. “Juice” sold over a million copies in the US and achieved triple-platinum status in Canada. Her video for “Angel of the Morning” was an early country music video on MTV. In 1982, she received two Grammy nominations and won a Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for “Break It to Me Gently” from her platinum-selling album “Quiet Lies.” She continued to chart successfully, including multiple number-one country hits, through the mid-1980s, solidifying her status as a crossover artist. Following changes in the music industry and a break to focus on family, Newton returned to recording in the late 1990s and has continued to perform, with her music experiencing renewed recognition in film and television in the 2010s and 2020s.
