Kay Hanley was born on September 11, 1968, in Dorchester, Massachusetts. She began her career in music as the lead singer of the Boston-based alternative rock band Letters to Cleo, which she co-founded with Greg McKenna in 1990. The band released three albums between 1990 and 2000, including hits like “Awake” and “Here and Now.” Letters to Cleo gained significant recognition, and Hanley, along with the band, appeared in the 1999 film “10 Things I Hate About You,” performing two songs. After a hiatus, Letters to Cleo reunited in 2016 to release new music and embark on tours, with plans for a fourth studio album.
In the late 1990s, Hanley expanded her work into television and film as a singer and songwriter. She wrote songs for WB’s animated series “Generation O” and provided the singing voice for Rachael Leigh Cook’s character, Josie, in the 2001 Universal Pictures film “Josie and the Pussycats.” She also performed cover songs in “10 Things I Hate About You.” Hanley has become a Peabody Award-winning songwriter for animated television, contributing original songs to shows such as Disney Junior’s “Vampirina” and “Doc McStuffins,” DreamWorks’ “Harvey Street Kids,” and Netflix’s “Ada Twist, Scientist” and WB/Cartoon Network’s “DC Super Hero Girls.” In 2022, she won an Emmy Award for her songwriting on “We The People.”
In addition to her creative work, Hanley is actively involved in advocacy for songwriters. She serves as co-executive director of Songwriters Of North America (SONA), a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the value of songs and songwriters. Her advocacy efforts led to her selection as a representative for songwriters on the Mechanical Licensing Collective, where she holds the position of vice-chair of the Unclaimed Royalties Oversight Committee. Hanley and her writing partners also created “Kindergarten: The Musical,” which debuted in 2024 on Disney Junior, with Hanley serving as an executive producer.
