Katatonia

Katatonia is a Swedish heavy metal band known for its evolution from death-doom to progressive rock, consistently delivering melancholic and atmospheric music. After establishing their unique death/doom metal sound with the 1991 demo ‘Jhva Elohim Meth… The Revival’ and influential debut album ‘Dance of December Souls’ in 1993, Katatonia pioneered melancholic and atmospheric heavy music. Formed by Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström, early work included the EP ‘For Funerals to Come…’ (1995) and second studio album ‘Brave Murder Day’ (1996).

Looking ahead, their thirteenth studio album, ‘Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State,’ is set for release in 2025 on Napalm Records. This project will feature a new lineup, including Nico Elgstrand and Sebastian Svalland, following the 2025 departure of co-founder Anders Nyström, solidifying Katatonia’s enduring legacy of artistic evolution.
