Kristian Merrill Bush was born on March 14, 1970, in Knoxville, Tennessee, and raised in Sevierville, Tennessee, near the Smoky Mountains. Early in his life, he was exposed to music and began playing the violin at age four, receiving classical training through the Suzuki method at the University of Tennessee. By age eleven, he transitioned to the guitar and started creating original music. Bush attended Avon Old Farms Boarding School, graduating in 1988, and later earned a degree in creative writing from Emory University in Atlanta. During his college years, he actively engaged with the local music scene, drawing inspiration from bands like R.E.M. and the Indigo Girls. His deep family roots trace back to A.J. Bush, founder of Bush Brothers and Company, though Kristian chose a different path, pursuing his passion for music.
Bush’s musical career began with the folk-rock duo Billy Pilgrim, formed in 1990 with Andrew Hyra. After independently releasing “St. Christopher’s Crossing” in 1991 and “Words Like Numbers,” they signed with Atlantic Records. Their self-titled album “Billy Pilgrim” was released in 1994, followed by “Bloom” in 1995. After a period of touring and subsequent hiatus, Bush co-founded Sugarland in 2002 with Kristen Hall and Jennifer Nettles. The trio achieved significant success with their debut album, “Twice the Speed of Life,” in 2004, and later, as a duo with Nettles, released acclaimed albums like “Enjoy the Ride” (2006) and “Love on the Inside” (2008), earning multiple Grammy, CMA, and ACM awards. In 2011, a stage collapse at the Indiana State Fair led to a difficult period and Sugarland’s eventual hiatus.
Following the hiatus, Bush embarked on a solo career, releasing his critically acclaimed album “Southern Gravity” in 2015, which featured hit singles such as “Trailer Hitch.” He has also engaged in numerous collaborations, producing for artists like Lindsay Ell and writing music for the theatrical production “Troubadour.” In 2017, Sugarland officially reunited, releasing the album “Bigger” in 2018. Bush also formed the band Dark Water with his brother Brandon and Benji Shanks. In 2022 and 2023, he released a series of four solo albums, collectively titled “52,” to commemorate his 52nd birthday, showcasing a vast collection of unreleased material. Additionally, Billy Pilgrim reformed and resumed performing, including a notable appearance at the Grand Ole Opry in 2024.
