Kim Wilde, born Kim Smith on November 18, 1960, in Chiswick, London, England, UK, embarked on her musical journey at an early age. Her first professional credit was as a backup singer for her brother Ricky’s 1972 song “I Am an Astronaut.” In 1980, after completing a foundation course at St Albans College of Art & Design, she signed with RAK Records under the name Kim Wilde. Her debut single, “Kids in America,” released in January 1981, achieved immediate success, reaching No. 2 in the UK Singles Chart and top five positions in Germany, France, and Australia. This marked the beginning of a prolific period for Wilde, with her debut album ‘Kim Wilde’ (1981) and subsequent singles like “Chequered Love” further solidifying her presence in the music industry.
Throughout the 1980s, Kim Wilde continued to release successful music, including her 1982 album ‘Select’ featuring hits like “Cambodia” “and “View from a Bridge,” which topped charts in France and made the top ten in Germany and Australia. Her career saw a significant turning point with the 1986 album ‘Another Step,’ which included a Hi-NRG remake of The Supremes’ “You Keep Me Hangin’ On.” This track became a US No. 1 single in 1987, establishing her as the fifth UK female solo artist to achieve this feat. The album ‘Close’ (1988) became her best-selling album to date, earning her a European Platinum Award. She also supported Michael Jackson on his Bad World Tour in 1988 and David Bowie on his tour, demonstrating her appeal to larger audiences.
After a period of focusing on her family and a successful career in landscape gardening, during which she won a Gold award at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show in 2005, Wilde returned to music. She collaborated with German pop star Nena on “Anyplace, Anywhere, Anytime” in 2003, a top 10 hit in several European countries. In 2018, she released her fourteenth studio album, ‘Here Come the Aliens,’ inspired by a UFO encounter. In 2021, she celebrated 40 years in music with the release of her greatest hits album, ‘Pop Don’t Stop: Greatest Hits,’ continuing to perform and release new music.
