About

David Andrew Burd, professionally known as Lil Dicky, was born on March 15, 1988, in Cheltenham Township, Pennsylvania. Raised in an upper-middle-class Jewish family, Burd developed an early interest in hip-hop and alternative rock. His exposure to rapping began in the fifth grade through a history report. He later attended the University of Richmond, graduating summa cum laude in 2010 with a BSBA. After college, Burd moved to San Francisco, California, and worked in account management at the advertising agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners. His creative approach of reimagining a progress report as a rap video led to his transfer to the creative department, where he focused on copywriting for campaigns, including the NBA’s “BIG” campaign.

Burd initiated his rap career in 2011, initially seeking attention for comedic purposes to pursue writing and acting. However, he developed a passion for rapping and committed to the craft. He spent over two years working on his debut mixtape, “So Hard,” primarily recording on a MacBook Pro with a $400 microphone while still maintaining his advertising job. In 2013, he began releasing one song per week for five months under the series “Hump Days.” His breakthrough came with the music video for “Ex-Boyfriend,” released on April 23, 2013, which accumulated over one million YouTube views within 24 hours. Following the release of 32 songs and 15 music videos, Burd launched a successful Kickstarter campaign in November 2013, raising $113,000 against a $70,000 goal to fund future music production, videos, and touring. He held his first live concert at TLA in Philadelphia on February 19, 2014, and signed with CMSN for management the same year.

His debut studio album, “Professional Rapper,” released on July 31, 2015, featured collaborations with artists such as Snoop Dogg, T-Pain, Fetty Wap, and Rich Homie Quan. The album received favorable critical reception and peaked at number seven on the Billboard 200. The single “Save Dat Money” achieved double-platinum certification by the RIAA and marked his first entry on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2018, his single “Freaky Friday,” featuring Chris Brown, reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped charts in New Zealand and the United Kingdom. In 2019, he released the charity single “Earth,” featuring numerous artists, which aimed to promote environmental awareness and achieved platinum certification. In March 2020, Burd co-created “Dave,” a television comedy series for FXX based on his life, which has run for three seasons and garnered positive reviews.
