Lindsey Stirling was born on September 21, 1986, in Santa Ana, California. Raised in a modest household, she began taking violin lessons at the age of five, as her parents could only afford half-lessons. Despite initial challenges, she developed a unique blend of violin playing and dance, driven by a childhood dream to combine both. Her early experiences included joining a rock band called Stomp on Melvin in high school, where she wrote a solo violin rock song and won Arizona’s Junior Miss state title, along with the Spirit Award in the America’s Junior Miss Finals competition. She also spent a year as a member of the Charley Jenkins Band, further honing her performance skills.
Stirling gained significant public recognition in 2010 as a quarter-finalist on season five of “America’s Got Talent,” where she was dubbed a “hip hop violinist.” Although her style of dancing while playing the violin was initially met with mixed reviews from judges, she embraced it, relying on her Internet presence to connect with audiences. Her YouTube channel, “Lindseystomp,” created in 2007, became the primary platform for her music videos. A collaboration with cinematographer Devin Graham for her “Spontaneous Me” music video in 2011 marked a turning point, boosting her channel’s popularity. By 2012, her music video “Crystallize” was YouTube’s eighth-most watched video. She released her eponymous debut album in 2012, which achieved commercial success, including platinum certification in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Poland. Her subsequent album, “Shatter Me,” released in 2014, reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and won Top Dance/Electronic Album at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards. She also achieved a No. 1 position on the Hot Christian Songs Chart in 2015 with “Hallelujah.”
Over the years, Stirling has continued to expand her career through successful albums, international tours, and diverse collaborations. Her autobiography, “The Only Pirate at the Party,” became a New York Times best-seller in 2016. She competed on “Dancing with the Stars” in 2017, finishing in second place, and has consistently released new music, including holiday-themed albums “Warmer in the Winter” (2017) and “Snow Waltz” (2022), and “Artemis” (2019). Her work has been featured in film and television, and she maintains an active touring schedule. In 2024, she announced her latest album, “Duality,” and embarked on a multi-city tour. She also engages in philanthropy, founding The Upside Fund in 2020 to support individuals financially and through medical bill assistance.
