Luis Alfonso Rodríguez López-Cepero, known as Luis Fonsi, was born on April 15, 1978, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His early life involved a move to Orlando, Florida, at age 10, where he attended Dr. Phillips High School and participated in an a cappella group called ‘The Big Guys.’ His dedication to music led him to Florida State University School of Music on a full scholarship in 1995, before he eventually pursued a professional music career, signing with Universal Music Latin. His debut album, ‘Comenzaré,’ released in 1998, peaked at number 11 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart, marking the beginning of a successful career across Latin America.
Fonsi’s career continued with notable achievements, including performing at the Great Jubilee Concert for a Debt-Free World for Pope John Paul II in 2000 and opening for Britney Spears’ Dream Within a Dream Tour in 2002. His English album ‘Fight The Feeling’ (2002) and fifth album ‘Abrazar la vida’ further expanded his reach, with singles like ‘¿Quién Te Dijo Eso?’ topping Billboard Latin charts. In 2008, his song ‘No Me Doy por Vencido’ spent 21 weeks at number one on the Hot Latin Songs chart, earning him a Latin Grammy Award in 2009 for ‘Song of the Year’ with ‘Aquí Estoy Yo,’ which also led to a performance at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo.
The year 2017 marked a significant turning point with the release of ‘Despacito’ featuring Daddy Yankee. This song achieved global success, becoming number one on nearly every Latin Billboard chart and the most-watched YouTube video until November 2020.
