About

Madeleine Peyroux was born in Athens, Georgia, in 1974. She spent her early childhood in New York and California before moving to Paris with her mother at age 11. In interviews, Peyroux has described her parents as “hippies” and “eccentric educators” who supported her musical interests. As a teenager, she began busking in Paris’s Latin Quarter, performing alongside street musicians. At 16, she joined The Lost Wandering Blues and Jazz Band, touring Europe and exploring the music of artists like Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday. This period shaped her unique performance style and vocal delivery, which would later become a hallmark of her career.

Peyroux’s distinct talent was recognized by Atlantic Records, leading to the release of her debut album, “Dreamland,” in 1996. The album featured her interpretations of jazz and blues standards and introduced her to a wider audience. Following a period of vocal challenges and recovery, she achieved mainstream success with her 2004 album, “Careless Love,” which sold over half a million copies and was certified gold by the RIAA. This album marked the beginning of a significant collaboration with producer Larry Klein, with whom she created several critically acclaimed albums. These works include “Half the Perfect World” (2006), “Bare Bones” (2009), and “Anthem” (2018), showcasing her versatility in jazz, folk, and chamber pop genres. Her music has been featured in film and television, and she has received accolades such as the BBC International Artist Of The Year award.

Throughout her career, Peyroux has maintained an active touring schedule, performing globally and collaborating with various musicians. She released “Let’s Walk” in 2024, continuing her exploration of contemporary themes. Beyond her musical contributions, Peyroux is involved in philanthropy, notably raising funds for homeless organizations through surcharges on her concert tickets and participating in benefit albums. Her enduring commitment to her craft and ability to adapt while staying true to her artistic vision have solidified her position as an respected figure in the music industry.
