About

Maroon 5 originated as Kara’s Flowers in February 1994, when Adam Levine (lead vocals, guitar), Jesse Carmichael (guitar, keyboards), Mickey Madden (bass), and Ryan Dusick (drums) formed the band during their high school years in Los Angeles, California. After self-releasing their independent album “…We Like Digging?”, Kara’s Flowers signed with Reprise Records and released their debut studio album, “The Fourth World” (1997). This album gained a limited audience, leading to the band being dropped by Reprise Records and its members temporarily focusing on college.

In 2001, the band reformed as Maroon 5, with the addition of guitarist James Valentine. They signed with Octone Records and released “Songs About Jane” in 2002. This album produced popular singles such as “Harder to Breathe,” “This Love,” and “She Will Be Loved,” and reached number six on the Billboard 200, achieving quadruple platinum status by 2005. The band received the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2005. Following Ryan Dusick’s departure due to injuries in 2006, Matt Flynn joined as the new drummer. Their second album, “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long” (2007), debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, with its lead single “Makes Me Wonder” topping the US Billboard Hot 100. Jesse Carmichael took a brief hiatus in 2012 and was replaced by keyboardist PJ Morton, who later became a permanent member.

Over the years, Maroon 5 continued to achieve commercial success and expand its sound. Their third album, “Hands All Over” (2010), was re-released in 2011 to include the U.S. number-one hit “Moves Like Jagger.” Their fourth album, “Overexposed” (2012), featured “One More Night,” which held the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for nine consecutive weeks. In 2014, Carmichael returned, and the band released “V,” which reached number one on the Billboard 200. Sam Farrar, a long-time collaborator, joined officially in 2016. Subsequent albums like “Red Pill Blues” (2017) and “Jordi” (2021) continued to deliver successful singles, including “Girls Like You” featuring Cardi B, which spent seven weeks at number one. Mickey Madden departed in 2020, with Farrar transitioning to bass. Maroon 5 has sold over 135 million records globally and recently released their eighth studio album, “Love Is Like” (2025). The band has garnered multiple accolades, including three Grammy Awards and three American Music Awards.
