Matt Sallee

Matthew Levon Sallee was born on February 11, 1994, in Baltimore, Maryland. His musical journey began at age four, singing in his church’s choir where his father served as pastor. Growing up in La Plata, Maryland, Sallee continued to develop his vocal talents, graduating from Maurice J. McDonough High School in 2012 before pursuing higher education at Berklee College of Music. His early career included performing in wedding bands, further honing his versatility and stage presence.

Sallee’s significant career turning point arrived in 2017 when he joined the internationally acclaimed a cappella group, Pentatonix. He was selected to replace original vocal bass Avi Kaplan, making his debut appearance during the group’s Christmas concert tour that same year. His first album with the group was “A Pentatonix Christmas Deluxe.” As the vocal bass, Sallee contributes a foundational element to Pentatonix’s sound, often performing basslines and vocal percussion simultaneously, as demonstrated in their cover of “Havana.” He also handles baritone solos and occasionally beatboxing, showcasing his broad vocal range and technical skills.

Since joining Pentatonix, Sallee has been an active participant in the group’s continuous success, including extensive touring across Europe, Asia, and North America. He has contributed to numerous albums, videos, and television specials, earning three Grammy Awards with the group. A notable milestone was the group receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in February 2023. Sallee’s consistent contributions and vocal prowess have solidified his position within the group and in the a cappella music scene.
