Coin was an American indie pop band formed in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2012 by Chase Lawrence (vocals/keys), Joe Memmel (guitar/vocals), Ryan Winnen (drums), and Zach Dyke (bass guitar). Lawrence, Memmel, and Dyke were students at Belmont University and connected through mutual friends with Winnen. The band initially recorded four songs at their school, releasing them online, and quickly gained a dedicated local following in Nashville before the release of their debut EPs. They released “Saturdays” in late 2012 and “1992” in 2013, with singles like “Atlas” (2013) and “Time Machine” (2013) being re-recorded for their later debut album.
Coin rose to mainstream attention in 2015 with their lead single “Run” from their self-titled debut album, “Coin,” produced by Jay Joyce and released by Columbia. This was followed by significant success in 2016 with “Talk Too Much,” the lead single from their second studio album, “How Will You Know If You Never Try,” released in April 2017. “Talk Too Much” became their first song to chart on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart. The band continued to release music, including “Dreamland” (2020), “Rainbow Mixtape” (2021), and “Uncanny Valley” (2022), the latter leading to their largest performance to date at MGM Music Hall at Fenway on September 23, 2022.
In 2024, Coin released their fifth studio album, “I’m Not Afraid of Music Anymore,” on September 13, through 10K Projects. However, on January 28, 2025, lead singer Chase Lawrence announced the band’s disbandment due to allegations of unspecified misconduct against drummer Ryan Winnen and guitarist Joe Memmel. This decision led to the cancellation of the second leg of their “I’m Not Afraid of Tour Anymore” scheduled for early 2025.
