Maxine Nightingale

Maxine Nightingale’s breakthrough hit ‘Right Back Where We Started From’ reached No. 8 in the UK in late 1975 and climbed to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US in May 1976. This career-defining track emerged after her vocals on Al Matthews’ song ‘Fool’ caught the attention of producer Pierre Tubbs.

Tubbs, collaborating with composer J. Vincent Edwards, co-wrote ‘Right Back Where We Started From’ specifically for Nightingale, leading to its successful release through United Artists Records. Earlier in her career, Nightingale gained initial recording experience with three singles for Pye Records in 1969 and 1971. She also honed her performance skills within the British cabaret circuit with the band Unisound, which she joined around 1965.

Nightingale transitioned into musical theater, spending approximately 18 months in the West End production of ‘Hair’ in London, where she held a supporting role and understudied the female lead, Sheila. Her stage career continued in Germany, where she starred as Sheila in German productions of ‘Hair,’ and performed in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ and ‘Godspell.’ Upon returning to London in the mid-1970s, she appeared in the West End production of ‘Savages’ before focusing on session singing, which ultimately led to her chart success.
