About

Melody Gardot, born on February 2, 1985, in New Jersey, cultivated her musical talents from an early age, learning piano at nine and performing in Philadelphia bars by 16. Her early influences ranged from The Mamas & the Papas to Duke Ellington and Radiohead. In November 2003, at the age of 19, Gardot sustained severe head, spinal, and pelvic injuries after being struck by an SUV while cycling in Philadelphia. This life-altering accident left her with significant challenges, including hypersensitivity to light and sound, and memory loss, leading to a year-long hospital confinement.

The recovery process profoundly shaped Gardot’s artistic path. Encouraged by a physician, she embraced music as a therapeutic tool, initially learning to hum, then sing, and eventually write songs. Unable to play piano comfortably, she adapted by learning guitar while lying on her back. These early compositions formed her self-produced EP, ‘Some Lessons: The Bedroom Sessions’ (2005). Her unique story and compelling music garnered attention from radio stations, particularly WXPN in Philadelphia, leading to a record deal with Universal Music Group. Her debut album, ‘Worrisome Heart,’ was released in 2008 on Verve Records, followed by ‘My One and Only Thrill’ in 2009, produced by Larry Klein.

Gardot has since released several studio albums, including ‘The Absence’ (Decca, 2012), ‘Currency of Man’ (Decca, 2015), ‘Sunset in the Blue’ (Decca, 2020), and ‘Entre eux deux’ (Decca, 2022) with Philippe Powell. Her music, characterized by a blend of jazz and folk with a distinctive smoky vocal style, has earned critical and commercial success, with albums charting internationally and receiving certifications such as Gold and Platinum. Beyond her musical achievements, Gardot is recognized as an advocate for music therapy, sharing her experiences and establishing a music therapy program in New Jersey in 2012. She is also a Buddhist, macrobiotic cook, and humanitarian, speaking fluent French and considering herself a ‘citizen of the world.’
