Mykki Blanco, born Michael Quattlebaum Jr. on April 2, 1986, in Orange County, California, established an early presence in the arts. At the age of 15, Blanco earned an Indies Spirit Award for founding Paint In Consciousness Experimental Theater in Raleigh, North Carolina. After periods of living independently and attending institutions like the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Parsons School of Design, Blanco transitioned into a musical career. Their debut book of poetry, “From the Silence of Duchamp to the Noise of Boys,” was published by OHWOW in June 2011, marking an initial step into a broader artistic reach.
Blanco’s musical journey commenced in 2012 with the EP “Mykki Blanco & the Mutant Angels,” followed by the mixtape “Cosmic Angel: The Illuminati Prince/ss” in November of the same year. This period saw collaborations with producers such as Brenmar, Flosstradamus, and Le1f. In 2013, the EP “Betty Rubble: The Initiation” was released, furthering their discography. Significant milestones include the 2014 release of the “Spring/Summer 2014” EP and the mixtape “Gay Dog Food,” which featured collaborations with Kathleen Hanna, Cities Aviv, and Cakes Da Killa. Blanco’s debut album, “Mykki,” was released on September 16, 2016, and they have since continued to release critically recognized work, including “Broken Hearts & Beauty Sleep” in June 2021 and “Stay Close to Music” in October 2022 through Transgressive Records.
Throughout their career, Mykki Blanco has engaged in notable collaborations and maintained an active role as an activist. They contributed to Teyana Taylor’s 2018 song “WTP” and collaborated with Kanye West on the track “Bye Bye Baby” for his unreleased album “Yandhi.” In June 2015, Blanco publicly disclosed their HIV-positive status, choosing transparency for personal well-being. This disclosure garnered significant positive response, reinforcing their commitment to artistry and advocacy. Blanco identifies as transgender and began hormone therapy in 2019, consistently using her/they pronouns. In November 2023, Blanco signed an open letter advocating for a Gaza ceasefire.
