NEEDTOBREATHE, an American rock band, was formed in 1998 by brothers William Stanley “Bear” Rinehart III and Nathaniel Bryant “Bo” Rinehart in Seneca, South Carolina. The brothers honed their craft performing for coffee house audiences at Furman University, where Bear Rinehart was also recognized as the 2002 Banks McFadden trophy winner for South Carolina football player of the year. Following their graduation, Bear and Bo, alongside Joe Stillwell and Seth Bolt, independently produced several releases in Bolt’s Plantation Studios. This period saw the band release their first album, “The Feature,” in 2001, followed by the three-song EP “Soulrock Review” in 2003, and two four-song EPs, “Fire” and “Turnaround,” in 2004. These independent efforts led to their signing with Lava Records in 2005.
The band’s career progressed with their signing to Atlantic Records and Sparrow Records, leading to their second studio album, “Daylight,” released on April 4, 2006. This album featured the single “You Are Here” and brought the band significant attention, including a cover feature in CCM Magazine, an uncommon endorsement for a new artist. In 2007, they released “The Heat,” which received two Dove Award nominations, with “Washed by the Water” winning for “Rock/Contemporary Song of the Year” in 2009. Subsequent albums such as “The Outsiders” (2009) and “The Reckoning” (2011) saw them charting on the Billboard 200 and Hot Christian Albums charts. Their 2014 album, “Rivers in the Wasteland,” debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the Christian Albums chart. This album marked a turning point following the departure of drummer Joe Stillwell and the arrival of Randall Harris, and addressed an intense period of conflict between the Rinehart brothers.
NEEDTOBREATHE continued to achieve commercial success with “HARD LOVE” (2016), which debuted at No. 1 on the Top Album Sales chart and No. 2 on the Billboard 200. The band also established the NEEDTOBREATHE OneWorld Health Center in Tola, Nicaragua, in 2017, funded through their touring and fan donations. In 2020, Bo Rinehart departed the band, and Tyler Burkum joined, coinciding with the release of “Out of Body.” They followed this with “Into the Mystery” in 2021, and “Caves” in 2023, the latter featuring collaborations with artists like Carly Pearce and Old Dominion. Over two decades, NEEDTOBREATHE has achieved five Number One albums across Billboard Rock, Alternative, and other charts, accumulated over three billion career streams, and earned multi-platinum recognition for hits such as “Brother,” “Who Am I,” and “Let’s Stay Home Tonight.”
