She started performing and singing in Portuguese by age four and learned various instruments including the trombone, ukulele, guitar, and keyboards from age nine. Her early experiences included writing songs by twelve and performing in a Portuguese marching band as a teenager, alongside working summers as a chambermaid with her family. These experiences instilled a strong work ethic and a diverse musical foundation.
Furtado gained initial recognition with her debut album, “Whoa, Nelly!”, released in October 2000. This album spawned successful singles “I’m Like a Bird,” which earned her a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and “Turn Off the Light.” She continued to explore her heritage with her second album, “Folklore” (2003), featuring the official anthem “Força” for UEFA Euro 2004.
