Niall James Horan was born on September 13, 1993, in Mullingar, County Westmeath, Ireland. His parents divorced at an early age, leading him and his older brother, Greg, to live with their father. Horan taught himself to play the guitar at age 11 using YouTube tutorials. His singing talent was discovered by his aunt, and as a teenager, he performed at the Mullingar Arts Centre and opened for former X Factor contestant Lloyd Daniels in Dublin.
Horan gained prominence in 2010 when he auditioned for the seventh series of The X Factor in Dublin at 16. Despite mixed reviews from judges, he advanced to bootcamp. With a suggestion from guest judge Nicole Scherzinger, Horan was grouped with Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik, forming One Direction. The band signed with Syco for a reported £2 million and released their debut single, “What Makes You Beautiful,” in September 2011, which topped charts in multiple countries. Their debut album, “Up All Night,” achieved international success, making them the first UK group to have a debut album reach number one in the United States. One Direction continued to release successful albums, including “Take Me Home” (2012), “Midnight Memories” (2013), and “Four” (2014), embarking on multiple world tours that grossed millions. After releasing their fifth album, “Made in the A.M.,” the group went on an indefinite hiatus in November 2015.
Following the hiatus in 2016, Horan signed with Capitol Records as a solo artist. His debut single, “This Town,” released in September 2016, reached number 9 on the UK Singles Chart and number 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100. His second single, “Slow Hands” (2017), also saw significant chart success. His debut album, “Flicker,” released in October 2017, debuted at number one in Ireland and the US. He followed this with “Heartbreak Weather” (2020), which topped charts in the UK, Ireland, and Mexico, and most recently, “The Show” (2023), which reached number 1 in eight countries and number 2 in the United States. In addition to his music career, Horan co-founded Modest Golf in 2016 and became a coach on “The Voice” in 2023, winning in his first season and returning for a second triumph.
