Born on January 28, 1980, in Jamestown, New York, Nickolas Gene Carter began his career in entertainment at a young age, appearing in television commercials. His primary interest was music, which his mother supported through singing lessons. In 1992, at the age of 12, Carter successfully auditioned to become a member of the Backstreet Boys, a vocal group that would achieve global recognition. He had previously encountered future bandmates A.J. McLean and Howie Dorough through other auditions. The group’s first single, “We’ve Got it Going On,” was released in 1995, marking the beginning of a successful career spanning decades.
Beyond his work with the Backstreet Boys, Carter ventured into a solo career with his debut album “Now Or Never,” released in 2002. This album, featuring the single “Help Me,” was certified gold in both the United States and Canada, reaching number 17 on the Billboard 200 charts. He continued to release solo material, including “I’m Taking Off” (2011) and “All American” (2015), often during breaks from Backstreet Boys’ touring schedules. His entrepreneurial spirit also led him to powerboat racing, where his team, “Nick Carter Racing,” won its category in the OS Worlds in Daytona, Florida, in 2002. Carter also explored acting and reality television, starring in “House of Carters” (2006) and “I (Heart) Nick Carter” (2014), and competiting on “Dancing with the Stars” (2015) and “The Masked Singer” (2020).
In recent years, Carter has utilized his platform to address personal challenges, including substance abuse and mental health awareness. Following the death of his brother Aaron in 2022, he released the single “Hurts To Love You” and actively supports the On Our Sleeves foundation, dedicated to children’s mental health. His musical contributions continue, with recent singles like “Made for Us” and “Superman” (2023), and an Emmy Award win in 2024 for “Outstanding Musical Composition & Arrangement” for “Happy Xmas (Cancer’s Over),” highlighting his evolving career and commitment to his craft and community.
