Noah Thompson was born on April 18, 2002, in Huntington, West Virginia. He attended Lawrence County High School in Louisa, Kentucky. Before his rise to national prominence, Thompson worked as a construction worker. He also developed his musical skills by covering songs and performing original compositions such as “Not a Phase,” “Pedestal,” and “Heart Painted Black” on his YouTube channel. His journey to fame began unexpectedly when a friend, Arthur, signed him up to audition for American Idol, a path he had not initially intended to pursue.
Thompson’s participation in the twentieth season of American Idol showcased his country music talent to a wide audience. He consistently performed well, navigating through various themed weeks including contestant’s choice, judges’ song contest, and Disney night. Notable performances included “Giving You Up” by Kameron Marlowe during his audition, “Stay” by Rihanna in the Showstopper Round, and “One Day Tonight” as his winner’s song. Despite testing positive for COVID-19 prior to one of the live shows in May 2022, he continued to perform remotely from his hotel room, demonstrating resilience.
On May 22, 2022, Noah Thompson was crowned the winner of American Idol season 20, marking a significant milestone in his career. Following his victory, he released his debut extended play, “Middle of God Knows Where,” on June 9, 2023, under 19 Recordings and BBR Music Group. This EP featured singles like “One Day Tonight,” which charted on US Country and Canadian Digital charts. In 2022, he was nominated for the People’s Choice Award for Competition Contestant of 2022. While he later parted ways with his record label, he continues to work as an independent artist, writing, singing, and touring.
