Nick Ryan Waterhouse was born on February 8, 1986, in Santa Ana, California, and raised in Huntington Beach. He began playing guitar at age 12, developing an early interest in rhythm and blues, jazz, and soul music, influenced by artists like Bert Berns and John Lee Hooker. In his formative years, Waterhouse was involved in the Orange County underground music scene with his band Intelligista from 2002 to 2003, which was compared to groups like The Animals. He later attended San Francisco State University, where he became active in the DJ community and worked at Rooky Ricardo’s Records, an experience he cites as a significant influence on his musical development.
Waterhouse recorded his debut single, “Some Place,” in late 2010. Released on his independent ‘Pres’ imprint, the single was produced using analog methods. Following its release, he formed a backing band, The Tarots, and vocalists, The Naturelles, performing with artists such as Ty Segall and The Allah-Las. In 2011, he signed with Innovative Leisure Records and released his debut album, “Time’s All Gone,” in May 2012. He subsequently toured extensively across North America and Europe, and in 2012, he produced The Allah-Las’ self-titled debut album, continuing production work on their 2014 release “Worship The Sun.”
His career progression includes the release of several studio albums: “Holly” (2014), “Never Twice” (2016), “Nick Waterhouse” (2019), “Promenade Blue” (2021), and “The Fooler” (2023). In 2017, his song “Katchi” from “Never Twice,” remixed by Ofenbach, reached number one in the French charts. A significant career achievement occurred in 2021 when Waterhouse won an Album of the Year Grammy as a producer for Jon Batiste’s album “We Are.” He has continued to collaborate and produce for prominent artists, including Lana Del Rey, Leon Bridges, and Ty Segall, and in 2024, he was a producer on Jon Batiste’s Grammy-nominated album “World Music Radio” and Lana Del Rey’s Grammy-nominated track “Candy Necklace.”
