O.A.R. (Of a Revolution) formed in 1996 in Rockville, Maryland, with original members Marc Roberge (lead vocals/guitar), Chris Culos (drums), Richard On (guitar), and Benj Gershman (bass). The band recorded their debut album, “The Wanderer,” in 1996. After graduating from Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville, Maryland, three members attended Ohio State University, where they met Jerry DePizzo from Youngstown, Ohio, who joined as saxophonist and completed the current lineup. They recorded their second album, “Soul’s Aflame,” in 1999.
Initially building their audience through word-of-mouth and touring, O.A.R.’s third album, “Risen” (2001), reached No. 11 on the Billboard top internet sales chart. They signed with Lava Records in 2002, and their fourth album, “In Between Now and Then” (2003), debuted at No. 156 on the Billboard 200. In 2005, “Stories of a Stranger” debuted at No. 40 on the Billboard 200, producing singles like “Love and Memories” and “Lay Down.” “Love and Memories” charted on the Pop 100, Modern Rock Tracks, and Adult Top 40. The band performed at Madison Square Garden in 2006, drawing approximately 18,000 fans. By October 2006, O.A.R. had sold over 1.2 million albums. Their sixth studio album, “All Sides” (2008), featured the single “Shattered (Turn the Car Around),” which peaked at No. 2 on the Adult Top 40 and achieved platinum certification by the RIAA.
O.A.R. released their seventh studio album, “King,” in 2011, which debuted at No. 12 on the Billboard 200. In 2012, they released the live CD/DVD “Live on Red Rocks.” Their eighth studio album, “The Rockville LP” (2014), debuted at No. 13 on the Billboard Top 200. The band celebrated their 20th anniversary in 2016 with the compilation album “XX.” Their ninth album, “The Mighty,” was released in 2019, followed by “The Arcade,” their tenth album, in 2022. Touring members have included Mikel Paris (keyboards, percussion, backing vocals) since 2006 and Jon Lampley (trumpet, sousaphone, backing vocals) since 2011. The band has also engaged in charitable endeavors through their Heard The World foundation, supporting youth, education, and sustainable programs.
