Horrendous, an American progressive death metal band, was formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 2009 by Damian Herring and brothers Matt and Jamie Knox. The band’s early work, particularly their debut album “The Chills” (2012), exhibited a traditional death metal style. Over time, Horrendous evolved, incorporating more progressive metal elements, a stylistic shift that drew comparisons to bands like Death. This progression marked a significant turning point in their career, moving them towards a more technical and intricate sound.
The band’s albums, including “Ecdysis” (2014) and “Anareta” (2015), received critical acclaim from publications such as Pitchfork, Decibel, Stereogum, and Spin. “Anareta” was notably named Decibel Magazine’s Album Of The Year in 2015. In 2016, Alex Kulick joined the band as bassist, solidifying the current lineup. Their 2018 album, “Idol,” continued to build upon their sound, showcasing complex arrangements and maintaining their energetic live presence. The band’s latest album, “Ontological Mysterium,” released through Season of Mist on August 18, 2023, was chosen as Decibel’s top album of 2023.
Horrendous has consistently impressed audiences and critics with their dedication to crafting infectious and technically proficient music. They have toured, selling out venues like Brooklyn’s Saint Vitus, and have collaborated with other metal acts on stage, indicating their respected position within the metal community. Their blend of intelligent technicality and energetic performance has solidified their standing in the progressive death metal genre.
