Christopher Anthony Lunsford, professionally known as Oliver Anthony, was born on June 30, 1992, in Farmville, Virginia. Adopting his grandfather’s Depression-era name as his stage name, Anthony began writing music in 2021, and by 2022, he started releasing music under Oliver Anthony Music. His early music, influenced by artists like Hank Williams, explored themes of mental health and personal struggles, resonating with a growing audience who found solace in his authentic expression. Prior to his musical breakthrough, Anthony worked in industrial jobs in North Carolina and Virginia, including a paper mill where he sustained a skull fracture in 2013, which sidelined him for six months. From 2014 to 2023, he worked in outside sales in manufacturing before dedicating himself more fully to music.
Anthony’s career saw a turning point in August 2023 with the independent release of “Rich Men North of Richmond.” The song, which criticizes politicians, taxes, and welfare from a working-class perspective, quickly went viral after its upload to YouTube. It garnered millions of views within days and was promoted by prominent figures, leading to its debut atop the Billboard Hot 100. This achievement made Anthony the first artist to reach number one without any prior charting history. Alongside this success, six other Anthony songs, including “I’ve Got to Get Sober” and “Ain’t Gotta Dollar,” also charted in the iTunes top 20, further solidifying his unexpected rise.
Despite numerous offers from the music industry, Oliver Anthony initially expressed a desire to avoid the spotlight and maintain creative independence. He released additional music videos for songs like “I Want to Go Home” and “90 Some Chevy,” continuing to connect with his audience through raw, unedited performances. In March 2024, he released his debut studio album, “Hymnal of a Troubled Man’s Mind.” Anthony has been recognized for his unique artistry, characterized by a distinct, gravelly voice and a sincere, storytelling approach.
