One Step Closer

One Step Closer, originating from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in 2016, quickly established themselves within the melodic hardcore scene. The band, initially formed by Ryan Savitski (vocals) and Tommy Norton (drums, formerly guitar), sought to create music that blended the aggressive energy of hardcore with the emotive qualities of emo and 90s alternative rock. Early releases such as the “O.S.C. Demo” (2016) and “From Me to You” (2019) on Triple-B Records demonstrated their evolving sound. Their commitment to their unique style quickly garnered attention, with Stereogum naming them a “Band To Watch” prior to their debut album release.

The group signed with Run for Cover Records in 2021, a significant milestone that led to the release of their debut album, “This Place You Know,” in the same year. This album received positive reviews, establishing One Step Closer as a key act in modern hardcore. Band members such as Ross Thompson (guitar) and later Colman O’Brien (guitar) have been integral to the band’s creative process, contributing to their expanding musical palette. Their discography also includes several EPs like “Songs for the Willow” (2023), which further solidified their ability to incorporate elements of indie rock, post-hardcore, and shoegaze into their core sound.

Their most recent album, “All You Embrace,” released on May 17, 2024, on Run For Cover Records, showcases the band’s continued musical evolution. Collaborations with Isaac Hale of Knocked Loose and Mat Kerekes of Citizen on this album allowed them to explore new creative territories, resulting in a sound that is described as bigger, catchier, and moodier. This album reflects themes of loss and growth, capturing personal changes experienced by the band members.
