OneRepublic was formed in 2002 by Ryan Tedder and Zach Filkins in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The band initially gained traction on Myspace as an unsigned act, attracting interest from record labels. They signed with Velvet Hammer, an imprint of Columbia Records, and recorded their first album. However, the group was dropped by Columbia two months before the album’s scheduled release in June 2006. In 2007, under Timbaland’s Mosley Music Group, OneRepublic released their debut album, “Dreaming Out Loud,” which debuted at number 14 in the US. The lead single, “Apologize,” remixed by Timbaland, became a major international success, reaching number one in sixteen countries and securing a Grammy Award nomination. The album was later certified Platinum by the RIAA. Their second album, “Waking Up” (2009), continued their success with singles like “All the Right Moves” and “Secrets,” and achieved significant commercial performance, selling over 500,000 copies in the US and over 1 million worldwide.
The band’s third album, “Native” (2013), marked their first top ten album on the Billboard 200, peaking at number four. The album’s third single, “Counting Stars,” became their most successful to date, topping charts in multiple countries and reaching number two on the US Billboard Hot 100. The music video for “Counting Stars” became the first by a band to reach 1 billion views on YouTube in 2015, and as of July 2024, it has over 4 billion views. OneRepublic’s fourth album, “Oh My My” (2016), showed an evolution in their sound and debuted at number three on the Billboard 200. Following this, the band transitioned to releasing standalone singles more frequently. Their fifth studio album, “Human,” was released in 2021 after delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In July 2024, they released their sixth studio album, “Artificial Paradise,” and in July 2025, they signed a new global recordings partnership with BMG, marking a significant label change after 18 years with Mosley and Interscope Records. The band has sold approximately over 16 million records worldwide.
Throughout their career, OneRepublic has consistently toured globally and collaborated with various artists and brands. Notably, they supported Pink on her Funhouse Summer Carnival Tour in 2010 and Bon Jovi at The O2 Arena. They also opened for the Zac Brown Band and U2 on their respective tours. Their music has been featured in numerous television shows and films, including “Gossip Girl,” “Lost,” “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” “How to Get Away with Murder,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Lead singer Ryan Tedder has also achieved individual success, winning three Grammy Awards for his songwriting work with artists like Adele and Taylor Swift. The band continues to innovate, exploring new release strategies and collaborating on projects such as the UEFA Euro 2024 theme song “Fire” and the anime theme song “Nobody.”
