Power Trip

Power Trip formed in Dallas, Texas, in 2008, quickly establishing itself within the metal scene with its aggressive sound and energetic live shows. The initial lineup included Riley Gale on lead vocals, Blake Ibanez on lead guitar, Nick Stewart on rhythm guitar, Chris Whetzel on bass, and Marcus Johnson on drums. Chris Ulsh replaced Johnson on drums in 2009. The band signed with Southern Lord Records in 2013, releasing their debut studio album, “Manifest Decimation,” that same year. They gained further recognition for their distinctive style, which fused elements of hardcore punk with thrash metal, attracting a broad audience within heavy music genres. Riley Gale’s lyrical focus on systemic injustice and corporate greed provided a thematic depth to their music.

Their second album, “Nightmare Logic,” released in 2017, achieved significant critical acclaim and entered the Billboard charts, solidifying their status as a prominent band in the thrash metal genre of the 2010s. This success led to performances alongside established acts like Ozzy Osbourne, Anthrax, and Lamb of God. In 2018, they released “Opening Fire: 2008–2014,” a compilation of earlier tracks. The band was working on their third album in late 2019. The sudden death of frontman Riley Gale in August 2020, at the age of 34, from toxic effects of fentanyl, created uncertainty about the band’s future. Following a period of mourning, the band members, including Ibanez, Ulsh, and Whetzel, expressed a desire to continue creating music.

In December 2023, Power Trip made an emotional return to the stage with Seth Gilmore, also of the band Fugitive, stepping in as vocalist for a surprise show in Austin, Texas. This performance was a tribute to Riley Gale and a signal of the band’s continuation. This year, the band is scheduled to play several full-length sets, including at the No Values festival, in their hometown of Dallas, and in New York City. The band aims to honor Riley Gale’s memory and their existing catalog, with Gilmore committing to uphold the spirit of Gale’s legacy. While new music is a possibility, their immediate focus is on performing their established works and maintaining their connection with their dedicated fanbase.
