Preoccupations is a dynamic Canadian post-punk band that emerged from Calgary, Alberta, in 2012, originally under the name Viet Cong. The band was formed by former members of the acclaimed group Women, including Matt Flegel and Mike Wallace, who sought to create a fresh musical identity. With the addition of Scott Munro and Daniel Christiansen, Preoccupations quickly established themselves in the music scene, releasing their debut EP in 2013, which showcased their unique sound characterized by intricate post-punk elements.
In 2015, the band released their self-titled debut album, ‘Viet Cong,’ which received critical acclaim and solidified their reputation as a formidable force in the post-punk genre. Their performances at major festivals, including SXSW, further amplified their visibility and allowed them to connect with a broader audience. However, facing controversy over their original name, the band made a significant decision to rebrand themselves as Preoccupations in 2016, demonstrating their commitment to creating music that resonates positively with fans.
Under their new name, Preoccupations released their second studio album, ‘Preoccupations,’ in September 2016, which continued to explore their signature sound while incorporating new influences. The band further evolved with the release of ‘New Material’ in 2018, showcasing their growth and experimentation within the post-punk framework.
Most recently, Preoccupations released their fourth studio album, ‘Arrangements,’ in September 2022, exclusively through Flemish Eye Records. This album reflects their ongoing artistic development and commitment to pushing musical boundaries, ensuring that Preoccupations remains a vital and innovative presence in the contemporary music landscape.
