Ryan Jillian Santiago, known professionally as Royal & The Serpent, was born on May 25, 1994, in New Jersey. In her youth, Santiago participated in competitive dance. At the age of 14, an injury led her to transition from dance to musical theater. During her teenage years, she learned to play the guitar and began writing songs.
At 18, Santiago relocated to Los Angeles, where she attended art school and worked as a bartender. A co-worker encouraged her to pursue music professionally, leading to her debut single “Temperance” in 2017 under the stage name Royal & The Serpent. She released “Together” in 2018 and was featured on Tommee Profitt’s “Wicked.” By the end of 2019, she had signed with Atlantic Records.
In June 2020, Royal & The Serpent released “Overwhelmed,” her first single under Atlantic, which reached number 6 on the US Alternative chart and number 20 on the US Rock chart. Her debut EP, “get a grip,” followed in October 2020. She joined Yungblud’s Weird Time of Life virtual tour that year. In June 2021, she released her second EP, “Searching for Nirvana.” In January 2022, she was featured on Stand Atlantic’s “Pity Party” and released her third EP, “If I Died Would Anyone Care.” She also served as a supporting act for Demi Lovato’s Holy Fvck Tour and grandson’s Death of a Tour. In 2023, she supported Fall Out Boy on their So Much (for) Stardust tour and began releasing dual-singles monthly. In 2024, she contributed “Wasteland” to the soundtrack for Arcane’s second season.
