Kamau Mbonisi Kwame Agyeman, known professionally as KAMAUU, was born on February 2, 1991, in Washington, D.C., and was raised in Prince George’s County, Maryland. His early exposure to music and African culture at the Ujamaa Shule shaped his artistic foundation. In 2009, he moved to Brooklyn, New York, to study film at the Pratt Institute, graduating in 2014 with a BA. During his time at Pratt, he connected with the BiGCiTYBiGCiTY artist collective, which helped him refine his musical abilities.
Kamauu officially signed with Atlantic Records in 2015. His debut EP, “A Gorgeous Fortune,” released in 2016, featured his solo single “Jusfayu.” This track accumulated over 10 million cumulative streams, was recognized by NPR as a “Song We Love,” and was featured on the HBO series “Insecure” and the soundtrack for “FIFA 17.” He also contributed “The Icarus” to “The Birth of a Nation: The Inspired By Album” in 2016. In 2017, he released his full-length debut, “TheKAMAUU-CASSETTE: ŭRTH GōLD.” Further expanding his discography, “TheKAMAUU-CASSETTE: MíXD GRēēNS” was released in 2019, showcasing his blend of rap, reggae, soul, and doo-wop elements. In 2023, he released his second album, “LACUNA in The House of Mirrors,” and collaborated with Mike Schultz on the instrumental album “Where There Are Dreams There Are Dragons, Vol. 1.
KAMAUU has engaged in various projects and partnerships throughout his career. In 2016, he co-founded DoloBhana, a multi-disciplinary artist collective. He has been featured on tracks by artists such as Kota the Friend, Topaz Jones, Marques Martin, and Stella Santana. His work has gained attention from platforms like NPR, Vibe, and Complex. He has also collaborated with brands like JD Sports US and Nike, highlighting their collections. His consistent creation of music and engagement with diverse artistic communities underscores his sustained presence in the music industry.
