John Royal Wood Nicholson, performing as Royal Wood, was born and raised in Lakefield, Ontario. He began playing piano at four, starting formal lessons at eight. Throughout his teens, he developed into a multi-instrumentalist, proficient in guitar, bass, drums, clarinet, and trumpet. Following high school, Wood pursued business studies at McGill University, while performing piano in Montreal jazz clubs and developing his songwriting skills. His performing name honours his great-grandfather, Royal Rufus Wood.
Wood’s career began with the release of “The Milkweed EP” in 2002, which he wrote, arranged, and produced. This was followed by his full-length debut, “Tall Tales,” in 2004 on Maple Music, where he again handled production, drawing inspiration from artists like The Beatles. In 2007, he released “A Good Enough Day” on Dead Daisy Records, featuring a Steinway grand piano and a string quartet. This album earned international exposure with tracks featured on TV shows such as “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Private Practice,” and led to a European tour in 2008. Over the years, Wood has released eight studio albums, three EPs, and one live record, consistently evolving his musical style.
Notable career achievements include two Juno nominations, five Canadian Folk Music Award nominations, and a #1 added song at Hot AC. His 2010 album, “The Waiting,” led iTunes Canada to name him one of their Songwriters of the Year. In 2012, “We Were Born to Glory” debuted in the Top 25 on the Canadian Albums Chart and received a Juno nomination for Adult Alternative Album of the Year. His 2016 album, “Ghost Light,” was recognized by the Irish Times as one of the ‘Best Albums of the Year,’ and its lead single, “Long Way Out,” entered the CBC Music Top 20. In 2022, he released “What Tomorrow Brings,” crafted with producers Linda Perry and Jamie Scott, drawing from significant personal experiences.
