About

Russell Taff was born on November 11, 1953, in Farmersville, California. His early exposure to music came through his mother’s collection of black and Southern gospel albums, as secular music was restricted in his Pentecostal home. At age 11, Taff learned to play the guitar, which became an outlet from a challenging home environment marked by his father’s alcoholism and both parents’ abuse. During his teenage years in Hot Springs, Arkansas, he started a band called Sounds of Joy, which recorded three albums and opened for The Imperials, a prominent Christian music group.

In 1976, Taff joined The Imperials as lead vocalist, beginning a successful period for the group. From 1976 to 1981, his distinctive voice became integral to their sound, leading them to achieve significant commercial success and critical acclaim. During this time, The Imperials earned three Grammy Awards and five Dove Awards. Taff himself was recognized with a Dove Award. His work with The Imperials, including performances of songs like “Praise the Lord,” established him as a significant figure in contemporary Christian music.

Leaving The Imperials in 1981, Russ Taff embarked on a solo career, releasing twelve albums and earning two additional Grammy Awards and five Dove Awards. His 1985 album, “Medals,” was critically acclaimed. Throughout his solo career, Taff maintained a reputation for dynamic vocal performances and often collaborated with other artists. He also served as a member of the Gaither Vocal Band from 1994 and again from 2001 to 2004, and continues to perform at Gaither Homecoming concerts and solo events. A documentary film, “I Still Believe,” released in 2018, chronicled his life, addressing his musical journey and personal struggles with alcoholism.
