Sam and the Womp is a British pop group formed in September 2009, initially consisting of trumpeter Sam Ritchie, Dutch-born vocalist Bloem de Ligny (also known as Lady Oo), and producer Aaron “Audio” Horn. Their musical style blends traditional Balkan music elements with modern dub and drum ‘n’ bass. The group achieved significant international recognition with their debut single, “Bom Bom,” released as a digital download on August 19, 2012. This track reached number one on the UK Singles Chart, selling over a million copies worldwide, and its use in various advertising campaigns and media solidified its global presence.
Following their breakthrough, Sam and the Womp performed at notable venues and festivals, including Glastonbury Festival and Wembley Arena. They have toured Australia and shared stages with artists such as Dizzee Rascal, MIA, Mark Ronson, Rudimental, Disclosure, and Basement Jaxx. In 2014, Aaron Horn departed from the group, and Ritchie and de Ligny continued as a duo. They co-founded Womp Records Ltd. in 2015, under which they released their debut EP, _Womp Records, Vol. 1_, on January 15, 2018, followed by their second EP, _Bee Sides_, on May 18, 2018. Subsequent singles like “Posh Ragga” (featuring MC Solomon) and “Ice Cream Man” further showcased their evolving sound.
Recently, Sam and the Womp signed a new partnership with Cherry Red Records, indicating a fresh phase for the band. They have been releasing new music, including collaborations such as “Sun Dance” with UK-based Ghanaian vocalist K.O.G. in 2021, and “Rise Up” with Reggae MC Natty Campbell. Sam Ritchie is actively producing new material for upcoming releases, and the band is preparing to perform their new live show featuring new female MC Fedzilla, continuing their focus on energetic and culturally diverse musical expressions.
