About

Sidney Gish was born on March 18, 1997, in New Jersey. She developed an early interest in music, composing songs in middle and high school and participating in her school choir. Gish later moved to Boston to attend Northeastern University, where she studied the music industry from 2015 to 2020. During her time there, she was also a beatboxer for Pitch Please, the college’s female a cappella group. Her early ventures into online content included attempts to go viral on Tumblr, leading to a Buzzfeed News feature in 2016 for her mother’s embroideries of her doodles, showcasing her initial foray into public recognition outside of music.

Gish began her music career by releasing self-produced music on Bandcamp. Her early releases, ‘don’t call on me’ (2015) and ‘dummy parade’ (2016), were followed by the EP ‘Merry Crisis’ during her first college winter break. Her debut full-length album, ‘Ed Buys Houses,’ was self-released in December 2016. She edited the album using GarageBand and designed the cover with Photoshop techniques. This album gained local attention, leading to her performing concerts in Boston throughout 2017. Her second album, ‘No Dogs Allowed,’ released on December 31, 2017, achieved significant internet popularity within the DIY music community and received critical acclaim, including a 7.7 rating from Pitchfork and a positive review from The Fader.

Her career continued to progress with notable achievements and collaborations. In 2018, ‘No Dogs Allowed’ was named Album of the Year at the Boston Music Awards, where she also received four nominations. That same year, she interned in the A&R department at Island Records in Manhattan. A song of hers was featured on Spotify’s “New Music Friday” playlist during this time. Gish embarked on her first national tour, opening for bands like Camp Cope and Petal, and later opened for Mitski in New England. She joined the Agency for the Performing Arts and was recognized as one of Stereogum’s Best New Artists of 2018. In 2019, she performed at South by Southwest, was featured on NPR Music’s Austin 100, and released a split single with Cavetown. More recently, in 2023, she released new songs “Filming School” and “MFSOTSOTR” through the Sub Pop Singles Club and supported tours for The Beths and Jeff Rosenstock.
