Def Leppard, an English rock band formed in Sheffield in 1977, established itself as a leading force in the new wave of British heavy metal movement. The original lineup included Rick Savage (bass), Joe Elliott (lead vocals), Rick Allen (drums), Phil Collen (guitar), and Vivian Campbell (guitar). Their debut album, “On Through the Night” (1980), reached the Top 15 in the UK. Their sophomore effort, “High ‘n’ Dry” (1981), produced by Mutt Lange, helped define their melodic hard rock style, with “Bringin’ On the Heartbreak” becoming one of the first rock videos on MTV in 1982.
The band’s third album, “Pyromania” (1983), was a commercial breakthrough, featuring hit singles “Photograph” and “Rock of Ages” that topped the US Rock Tracks chart. “Pyromania” achieved Diamond certification in the US, selling over 10 million copies. This success was followed by “Hysteria” (1987), which topped charts in the UK, US, Canada, and Australia, selling over 30 million copies worldwide and spawning seven US Top 40 singles, including the No. 1 hit “Love Bites.” Following the passing of guitarist Steve Clark in 1991, Def Leppard released “Adrenalize” (1992), which also reached No. 1 in multiple countries. Vivian Campbell joined the band in 1992, solidifying the current lineup. They have sold more than 100 million records worldwide, earning a place among the best-selling music artists, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.
Def Leppard continued to release successful albums like “Euphoria” (1999) and “Diamond Star Halos” (2022), which debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard 200, making them one of only three groups with a newly charting top 10 title on the Billboard 200 in each decade since the ’80s. They consistently engage with fans through extensive touring, including major stadium runs and collaborations. Their innovative musical approach, characterized by multi-layered vocals and catchy guitar riffs, has earned them a lasting legacy and influenced a wide range of artists.
