Snow

Darrin Kenneth O’Brien, widely known as Snow, was born on October 30, 1969, in North York, Ontario, Canada. Raised in the Allenbury Gardens public housing project, his early life exposed him to diverse cultural influences. Despite facing personal challenges, including periods of incarceration, he developed a unique musical style blending dancehall and reggae with rock and pop elements. His interest in reggae music was sparked by an influx of Jamaican immigrants to his neighborhood in 1983, leading him to adopt Jamaican dialect in his musical expression.

Snow’s career breakthrough came with his debut album, “12 Inches of Snow,” released in 1992. The album’s lead single, “Informer,” became a global sensation, spending seven consecutive weeks at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. This achievement was officially recognized twice in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the best-selling and highest-charting reggae single in US history. The album itself sold over 8 million copies worldwide, establishing Snow as a significant figure in the reggae and pop music scenes. His subsequent work, such as the 1995 album “Murder Love,” further solidified his international presence, particularly in Asia, with singles like “Anything for You” and “Sexy Girl” achieving commercial success and respect within the Jamaican music community.

Throughout his career, Snow has continued to release music and collaborate with various artists. In 2000, he signed with Virgin Music Canada, releasing “Mind on the Moon,” which led to three Juno nominations. More recently, in 2019, he featured on Daddy Yankee’s reggaeton and dancehall hit “Con Calma,” a reimagining of “Informer.” This collaboration saw significant chart success, reaching number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 and securing multiple awards, including four Premio Lo Nuestro Awards and six Latin Billboard Music Awards in 2020. Snow has also made several television and film appearances, showcasing his sustained presence in the entertainment industry.
