About

Sophie Ballantine Hawkins was born on November 1, 1964, in New York City. She briefly attended the Manhattan School of Music to study percussion before deciding to pursue a full-time career in music. Her debut album, “Tongues and Tails,” released in 1992, quickly brought her international recognition. This album featured the successful single “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover,” which reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US and number 14 in the UK. The album’s critical and commercial success led to a Grammy Award nomination for Best New Artist in 1993.

Her second album, “Whaler,” released in 1994 and produced by Stephen Lipson, further solidified her career, producing another US top 10 hit, “As I Lay Me Down.” Three singles from “Whaler” entered the UK Top 40, including “Right Beside You,” which peaked at number 13. By 1998, Hawkins faced challenges with her record label, Sony Music, regarding her third album, “Timbre.” The label requested changes to her material, which she resisted to maintain artistic integrity. This led her to establish her own independent label, Trumpet Swan Productions, in 2001, allowing her to release subsequent recordings on her own terms.

Beyond her musical achievements, Hawkins has actively supported animal rights, environmental causes, and LGBTQ+ rights. She starred as Janis Joplin in the 2012 play “Room 105” and released her fifth album of new material, “The Crossing,” in the same year. In 2013, she appeared as herself on the TV series “Community.” Her latest album, “Free Myself,” was released in 2023. Throughout her career, Sophie B. Hawkins has consistently shown resilience and dedication to her artistic vision and social advocacy.
