Soulive is a dynamic funk and jazz trio that emerged from Woodstock, New York, in 1999. The band consists of drummer Alan Evans, organist Neal Evans, and guitarist Eric Krasno. Their journey began with a jam session that led to their debut album, “Get Down!” This initial release set the stage for their unique sound, blending modern styles with retro instruments, and quickly garnered attention in the jazz and funk scenes.
Following their debut, Soulive embarked on an extensive touring schedule, performing alongside iconic acts such as The Rolling Stones and Dave Matthews Band. Their second album, “Doin’ Something,” released under Blue Note Records, showcased their growth as artists and featured arrangements by renowned trombonist Fred Wesley. This album solidified their reputation, leading to collaborations with notable artists like Dave Matthews and Talib Kweli on subsequent projects.
In 2005, Soulive transitioned to Concord Records, releasing “Break Out,” which marked a shift towards beat-driven instrumentals and featured collaborations with legends like Chaka Khan and Robert Randolph. This album demonstrated their versatility and commitment to evolving their sound while maintaining their roots in funk and jazz.
Throughout their career, Soulive has not only released multiple acclaimed albums but has also participated in various music festivals worldwide, including Bonnaroo and the Monterey Jazz Festival.
