Suzanne Santo’s career began in earnest in 2006, when she co-founded the band honeyhoney with musician Benjamin Jaffe after the two met at a costume party. Already working as a model and actress alongside her music, she signed a record deal with the duo just a year later, initially performing under the name Zanzibar Lewis on the now-defunct Ironworks label.
Her breakthrough arrived quickly. honeyhoney released their only EP, Loose Boots, on February 26, 2008, followed by their debut album First Rodeo on November 4 of that year. Ironworks co-owner Kiefer Sutherland cast Santo as the lead in the band’s music video for “Little Toy Gun”, playing opposite his disheveled gambler. The group toured early on with Lifehouse, then released their second album, Billy Jack, on October 24, 2011 through their own honeyhoney Records/Lost Highway, followed by the Dave Cobb-produced third album 3 on June 9, 2015.
American Songwriter praised 3 for Santo’s “magnetic passion and swaggering star power,” declaring the group’s time had come. Her 2017 song “Better Than That” was featured alongside major acts on a Butch Walker-associated compilation, underscoring her reach as a solo artist after honeyhoney disbanded later that year.
